Setting the Scene: Half Moon Road Camping 🌲

My adventure begins on Half Moon Road, where I discovered a plethora of dispersed camping spots lining the way, as well as the Elbert Creek campsite. The area is simply stunning, and I was torn between camping at the official site or finding a more secluded dispersed location.

If you venture further along this road past the trailhead, you’ll encounter a creek crossing that requires a four-wheel drive with high clearance. If you’re up for it, crossing the creek leads you to Half Moon Gulch, one of the most beautiful spots around! I have even filmed a video exploring that area on a different channel, which you can check out here.

With the trailhead conveniently located right across from the campground, I decided to settle in for the night. It’s a great spot with tree cover and the soothing sounds of the creek nearby. However, I did notice that most of the sites were already taken, so I was lucky to find a suitable spot.

Preparing for the Climb: A Night Under the Stars 🌌

After setting up my tent, I faced a bit of light rain, which made me a little anxious about cooking dinner. But I managed to whip up a meal and prepare for an early start the next day. The thought of summiting Mt. Elbert, my seventh 14er out of fifty-eight, kept my spirits high!

The next morning, I awoke to an incredible sky, hinting at the spectacular sunrise awaiting me at the summit. I had heard of hikers leaving in the dark to catch the sunrise from the top, and while I’ve never done that, it’s definitely something to consider for future hikes!

The Climb Begins: The Northeast Ridge Route 🥾

Arriving at the parking lot around 6:15 AM, I was shocked to find it completely full. It seems I wasn’t the only one eager to tackle Mt. Elbert! After a quick bathroom break—let’s just say it wasn’t the cleanest experience—I was ready to hit the trail.

For my ascent, I chose the standard Northeast Ridge route, a class one climb that is straightforward and doesn’t require any scrambling. The trail spans just under ten miles round trip with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet.

Trailhead for Mt. Elbert

As I began my hike, the trail immediately started climbing, but it wasn’t as daunting as I had anticipated. Unlike the steep inclines of Mt. Sherman, this trail features a series of switchbacks that make the ascent manageable. I took breaks whenever I could to catch my breath and soak in the views.

Hiking Through the Wilderness: The Challenge Intensifies 🌄

As I progressed, I was surprised at how much the trail would level out, allowing me to regain some stamina. But just as I was enjoying this reprieve, it was back to climbing again! The trail became steeper, and I found myself sweating profusely as I pushed toward the summit.

Views from the hike

After breaking through the tree line, the views became breathtaking. However, I quickly realized that reaching the peak would take much more effort than I initially thought. Each time I thought I was nearing the summit, I encountered another false summit! It was a test of both physical endurance and mental fortitude.

As I paused to hydrate, I took in the sight of Mt. Massive, the second highest peak in Colorado, standing tall beside me. The wind picked up, and I had to throw on my hoodie to stay warm.

The Final Push: Almost There! đź’Ş

With the summit finally in sight, I felt a surge of energy. But as I began the final ascent, I quickly realized that this last stretch would be the most challenging yet. My legs were burning, and I was gasping for air, but the summit was so close!

Final push to the summit

After what felt like a million false summits, I finally reached the actual summit of Mt. Elbert! The views were absolutely stunning, and I couldn’t help but feel a wave of accomplishment wash over me. I had made it!

Celebrating the Summit: Enjoying the Views 🍻

At the top, I celebrated with a well-deserved beer and lunch while soaking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. It was a moment of triumph and reflection, knowing that I had conquered the highest point in Colorado.

As I descended, I felt a mix of exhaustion and exhilaration. The journey down was easier, but I still had to navigate the rocky terrain carefully. I was grateful for the experience and excited to plan my next adventure—perhaps tackling the De Callebron loop for four summits in one go!
