On my recent trip, I camped at the Derby Loop Campground, which marks the beginning of the Crescent Lake Trail. This spot is popular among hunters, as evidenced by the jawbone I found—likely from a big bull elk or perhaps a moose. While I’m not a hunter, I can still appreciate the wildlife that surrounds this area.

This campground is undoubtedly one of the best in the area. The soothing sound of water flowing down the nearby creek, combined with the surrounding aspens, creates a tranquil environment. While the site is on a slight slope, it offers a perfect retreat amidst nature. However, I must say, the spot I discovered on the other side of the Flat Tops was even more impressive. Now, let’s dive into the Crescent Lake Trail itself. This trail stretches approximately 12 miles and is rated a five on the difficulty scale. Along the way, you’ll encounter four stunning lakes: Emerald Lake, Stillwater Lake, Crescent Lake, and Mackinac Lake, each offering unique views and experiences.

The trail isn’t littered with large obstacles, but it can be rocky and narrow with some steep climbs. Despite the challenges, I encountered a late model stock pickup truck at Emerald Lake, which proves that the trail is accessible for vehicles with enough clearance.

Unfortunately, I didn’t make it all the way to Crescent Lake due to a miscalculation on my part regarding fuel. We had to turn around at Stillwater Lake, but thankfully, this was a family trip, and they had extra gas to help me reach a nearby gas station. I also stumbled upon an incredible campsite just off the trail that I’ve marked in Gaia for future reference.

🌄 The Beauty of Flat Tops Wilderness

Crescent Lake is situated within the White River National Forest, right at the edge of the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. It’s important to note that motor vehicles aren’t permitted in designated wilderness areas, but this trail conveniently leads right to the border, allowing access to numerous hiking trails.

The views along the trail are simply stunning, which is why this area ranks in my top three favorite spots. It’s quiet and peaceful, with only a handful of vehicles seen throughout the day—making it the perfect getaway from the noise of everyday life.

🌊 Crossing the Creek

I had read that the creek crossing could be tricky, but it turned out to be more mild than wild. However, there was a steep climb on the other side that could pose problems if it were muddy. I noted several dried-up mud holes along the route, which is something to keep in mind, especially if you plan to visit early in the season. Be sure to have your winter gear ready!
