Ophir Pass: The Perfect Warm-Up

Our adventure began at the Ophir Pass Trailhead, where the anticipation was palpable. Ophir Pass is known as an easy trail, making it a great starting point for those new to off-roading. Even a stock four-wheel-drive Subaru can handle this route with ease.

This trail is family-friendly and doesn’t require any modifications to your vehicle, making it accessible for most adventurers. As you ascend, the views are nothing short of spectacular. The pass sits at an elevation of 11,789 feet and has a rich history, having been used by Native Americans, fur trappers, and prospectors traveling between Silverton and Telluride.

Incredible Views from Ophir Pass

One of the highlights of Ophir Pass is the stunning valley view below. Although the road narrows at certain points, visibility allows for safe navigation. Uphill traffic generally has the right of way, so it’s essential to be patient and use common sense when meeting oncoming vehicles.

Descending Ophir Pass

Heading down, the terrain becomes a bit rockier, and the steep grade suggests using low gears to avoid riding the brakes. It’s easy to get distracted by the incredible scenery, so keep your focus on the road ahead.

Rocky Terrain on the Descent

As you reach the valley floor, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful aspen trees, just a stone's throw from the town of Ophir. Keep in mind that unlicensed vehicles like ATVs are permitted on the pass but not in the town itself, so plan accordingly.

Transition to Telluride

From Ophir, we took State Highway 145 into Telluride. This charming mountain town, though beautiful, was unfortunately not on our agenda for exploration today. There was still much wheeling to do! The Imogene Pass Trailhead begins in a residential neighborhood, so there's no place to air down your tires or take a break before hitting the trail.

Imogene Pass: The Real Challenge

After grabbing a late lunch at the Tomboy Mine, we were ready to tackle Imogene Pass. This trail is renowned for its narrow shelf roads and is not for the faint of heart. If you have a fear of heights, this trail might not be for you!

The views along the way are stunning, especially of Black Bear Pass and the nearby waterfall. However, the real challenge lies in the amount of traffic on the trail. You'll encounter modified trucks from tour companies and rental jeeps, making it crucial to be alert and ready to pull over in tight spots.

At one point, I found myself pulled over on the ledge side while vehicles passed on the mountain side at a steep angle. In hindsight, I should have pulled back to a safer spot where I felt more in control. Live and learn, right?

Through the Social Tunnel

Once you pass through the infamous "Social Tunnel," you’ll feel a sense of relief. This tunnel got its name because it was a meeting point for miners and single women from Telluride. It's fascinating to think about the history behind this route.

The Summit: A Scary Moment

As I continued my ascent, I reached the Smugglers Union Mine. Shelf roads can be nerve-wracking, particularly when you encounter oncoming traffic. If you want to overcome your fear of narrow trails, Imogene Pass is the perfect challenge.

However, the road to the summit became rocky and steep, presenting an unexpected challenge for my Gladiator. Just as I shifted into four low to tackle the climb, the vehicle popped out of gear at a precarious moment. With vehicles lined up behind me, I had to take a deep breath and strategize.

After a moment of panic, I managed to get the Gladiator moving again, but the experience left me on edge for the remainder of the journey. Once I reached the top, the views were breathtaking, and I felt a sense of accomplishment despite the earlier scare.

The Descent and Conclusion

On the way down, I met a friendly tour truck driver who shared that even seasoned drivers get stressed on this route. The descent was beautiful and not overly technical, but spring and summer can bring high water crossings.

As we wrapped up our day, I couldn’t help but recommend this route for anyone looking for a full day of wheeling. Tackling both Ophir and Imogene Passes is an incredible experience filled with stunning views, adventure, and a bit of adrenaline. It’s a weekend well spent in the majestic Colorado mountains.
