To earn my first Jeep Badge of Honor, I meticulously planned a route that loops back to my campsite via Corkscrew Pass. This journey begins at the Engineer Pass trailhead, just outside of Ouray along the famous Million Dollar Highway (Highway 550). The trail is rocky and steep, making it essential to have a high-clearance, short wheelbase 4x4 vehicle.

I recommend avoiding full-size pickups unless you're prepared to turn around at obstacles like large rock steps. The Poughkeepsie Gulch trailhead is about 2.5 miles from the start of Engineer Pass. But before diving into the trail, take a moment to check out a nearby waterfall that’s just a short walk away.

The weather was perfect during my trip—clear skies and no wildfire smoke. The views of the valley from the trail are nothing short of spectacular. The trail is rated as a 4/5 if you take the bypass and avoid "The Wall," a notorious obstacle that many people talk about.

As I climbed up the mountain, I faced the decision of whether to tackle "The Wall" or take the bypass. I wasn’t building a rock crawler and didn’t have lockers yet, but my Gladiator was up for the challenge. After watching numerous videos on YouTube, I felt confident about which line to take. Still, the poor breakover angle made me hesitate.

I've seen other Gladiators get stuck and have to winch up the wall, but I also saw Tacomas make it. If they can do it, so could I! The trail features rocky sections that a stock Jeep could handle, making it accessible for many.

Ultimately, I decided to take the bypass. I wasn't traveling with another vehicle, and the thought of being stranded was daunting. However, I plan to return with friends and give "The Wall" another shot!

The breathtaking peaks surrounding Lake Como made it the perfect stop for lunch. I visited during Labor Day weekend and was pleasantly surprised to find the trails relatively empty. The closer I got to the lake, the more excited I became about completing my first Badge of Honor trail.

From Lake Como, I continued to Hurricane Pass, a wide and easy trail that boasts a summit of 12,730 feet. The views from the top are simply stunning, offering a panoramic view of Lake Como and the entire valley below.

Corkscrew Pass is known for its steep, tight switchbacks, but the descent offers unparalleled views. The camera can’t truly capture the beauty of the scenery—the contrast of the blue sky with the red soil and the distant mountain range is breathtaking.
